Bedfordshire Progressive Synagogue

Bedfordshire Progressive Synagogue is delighted to be hosting Liberal Judaism’s next Open House Shabbats this Saturday 10 September.

This special service will both celebrate Liberal Judaism’s 120th anniversary and ONE SHABBAT – the annual weekend for small Jewish communities and Jews living remotely.

BPS Chair David Young said: “We are a small and friendly community. It therefore seemed ideal to mark LJ’s 120 years together with the Jewish Small Community Network’s ONE SHABBAT.

“We will read Ki Tetze, which contains the most mitzvot of any parasha in the Torah. One of those mitzvot provides our connected theme reading of ‘home’. Liberal Judaism is the ‘home’ of our community, therefore we are celebrating the founding of that home this Shabbat.”

The service is open to all to attend in person or watch via Zoom. For address details or the Zoom link, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Open House Shabbat initiative will see each Liberal Judaism congregation hold at least one Shabbat during the year, for which they will open their doors – whether in-person, online or both – to the rest of the Liberal Jewish world and beyond.

Ten members and friends of BPS kicked off this years Mitzvah Day project yesterday, with a 'Knit & Natter' afternoon. Our host Rosie provided delicious cakes and tea. The Luton & Dunstable NHS Trust neonatal unit had requested premature baby hats in 'traffic light' colours, and also tiny knitted sleeves about 6 inches long, [any colour] with a gap in the seam for canulas for the baby's arms. Nurse Debbie explained this during the afternoon.

We couldn't believe it had been a year since we had last met up as a group. All knitters or crocheter's are urged to help us over the next few weeks to achieve our goal. Please let Hilary Fox have your finished hats or sleeves before the 2nd week of November, and remember if possible the hats should be in red, orange or green. This is to help staff identify the most poorly babies at a glance. Other colours will be welcomed by Bedford Hospital who are not yet using the colour coding, and parents taking their babies home who have little in the way of tiny clothing. Patterns are available on the internet, or we can e-mail you some on request.

The UK Ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) will be streamed live on Thursday 27th January
